May 9, 2023 – Subject: Move-Out, Senior Advice, Surveys

Highlights

Dear undergraduate, graduate, and professional school students,

It’s May! We’re winding down the spring semester. Here are 3 ways to get through the month in between final exams:

  1. Celebrate your community. Our students are helping us celebrate the heritage months of several important campus communities: Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Jewish American Heritage Month, and (in advance of June), Pride Month.
  2. Get advice from the Class of 2023. We talked to a few graduating seniors to get their advice for fellow students, and senior Samantha shares how Berkeley changed her.
  3. Work in a workout. You have access to Recreation & Wellbeing facilities and programs through May 31.

Congratulations to the Class of 2023! If you are attending Spring Commencement on Saturday, May 13, read details about what to bring, where to park, etc.

FYI, the Roundup will take a break in June, and we’ll be back in July. In the meantime, we’d value your feedback about how we can improve the Berkeley Life Roundup email. You’ll be entered to win a $25 Amazon gift card.

Berkeley Life: By Students, For Students

Advice from 2023 Graduating Students

Four students share what made their Berkeley experience most memorable.

How Berkeley Changed Me for the Better

Solving problems, learning how to manage her time, and becoming a stronger leader were a few of the ways Berkeley changed senior Samantha H.

AA&PI: Nikkei Student Union

Meet Kylie K. and Emily T., two staff chairs of Berkeley’s Nikkei Student Union (NSU), a cultural club for members of the Japanese diaspora (“Nikkei”).

Visit the Magnes Museum

Celebrate Jewish History Month with first-year Rachel H. at the world-class Magnes Collection of Jewish Arts and Life in downtown Berkeley.

UNITY Drag Show

All the highlights of this year’s UNITY show. The theme of  “As Above, So Below” centers around dualities and is held by the UNITY Theme residential program, a “living-learning community that focuses on LGBTQ+ education, community-building, and leadership development.”

Move-Out

Traffic/Parking May 13

Heavy traffic is expected Saturday, May 13 for the campus commencement ceremony. Parking permits (annual, monthly, or daily) will not be valid at central campus lots (such as Underhill, Foothill, etc.) between 5 a.m. and 2 p.m. (nor will hourly parking be available in these lots). If you are planning to move out from campus housing that day, it is strongly recommended that you wait until after 2 p.m. to avoid traffic.

Move-Out Furniture Disposal: May 19 to 30

For students moving out and looking to dispose of their large furniture items: Donate your reusable goods to Cooperative Reuse. The program offers free mattress recycling. From May 19 to 30 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m, bring your reusable furniture to the southwest parking lot of Clark Kerr.

Get Free Furniture

If you or a friend needs to furnish an apartment: Come by the southwest parking lot of Clark Kerr between May 19 and 30 to get free, gently used furniture that’s been donated as part of the Cooperative Reuse Move-Out program.

Resources & Support

Tech Tips for Graduating Seniors

If you’re graduating, note these important tips about campus technology:

Reduce Google Storage

By June 2024 UC Berkeley must reduce the total amount of content in its collective Google accounts by 87% decrease. Start reducing your content now and/or move your content to another storage service as needed. You can find more information at Berkeley bConnected.

Summer Meal Plans

Get access to beverages, snacks, and meals in a variety of great locations across campus.

Berkeley-Visitor Wi-Fi

If you have family members or friends who will be visiting campus, please have them connect to Berkeley-Visitor; no CalNet ID or passphrase are required.

Jobs, Careers, Volunteer

Work with Kids This Summer

Berkeley/Oakland AileyCamp, a six-week summer dance camp for middle schoolers produced on campus by Cal Performances, is hiring students to work as Group Leaders and to serve as an Administrative Assistant.

Internship Prep & Connect Pilot Program

The Career Center is piloting a new equity-oriented program in the fall. The program, Internship Prep & Connect, aims to prepare undergraduate students to work in an internship by boosting career readiness and connecting you with employers that offer internship opportunities. Application deadline: July 31.

Watch Grad Slam

Watch a video of seven Berkeley graduate students showcase their research in three-minute talks at the Berkeley Grad Slam. Madison Browne’s presentation, Shedding Light on Alzheimer’s Disease, took first place.

Summer Check-In Group

Join a Summer Check-in Group that meets weekly with a small group of fellow graduate students to set goals, share resources and experiences, reflect on your values and priorities, and discuss topics and struggles related to life as a graduate student.

Tip for Reimbursements

A reminder for graduate students who are making reimbursements: When you click “Save & Continue” or “Save This Expense,” your report has been saved. You do not need to recreate a report. This will avoid duplicates in the system.

This month the Roundup was sent in Cal Messages, but we will return to our other format in July. Congratulations to everyone for getting through the spring semester!

Sincerely,

Stephen C. Sutton, Ed.D. (he/him/his)
Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs
